Introduction
Nearly 14 years into Syria’s protracted conflict, the country remains divided along lines of control, influence, and identity. Each region reflects a distinct convergence of actors, demographics, and power structures. Amid this fragmentation, national efforts to build a unified, peaceful, and just political transition face enormous challenges.
In this complex landscape, Suwayda holds a unique position. Located in southern Syria near the borders of Jordan and Israel, the province is predominantly home to members of the Druze community, along with Christian and Sunni Muslim minorities. These communities are bound together not only by shared geography, but also by deep national and historical ties.
Suwayda, like much of Syria, witnessed civic and political mobilization against the Assad regime, suffered attacks by ISIS, and became entangled in the competing influences of Russia and Iran. Public, military, and political activism in the province has ebbed and flowed in response to these shifting dynamics.
According to Syria’s Central Bureau of Statistics, Suwayda’s population was estimated at 540,657 in 2023. Local observers agree that around 90 percent of the population is Druze, with the remainder made up of Christians and Sunnis.
Beyond Suwayda itself, Druze communities are also concentrated in towns like Jaramana and Sahnaya near Damascus, villages in Quneitra (in the Golan Heights), and parts of Idlib’s countryside. In these areas, Druze religious and armed authorities maintain influence as part of a broader framework of self-protection and communal solidarity.
This study outlines the structure and influence of Suwayda’s religious leadership, armed factions, and political and civic currents. It also assesses the role of regional and international actors and evaluates points of convergence and divergence among various agendas. Ultimately, it offers recommendations for integrating local dynamics into a broader national political solution.
The report is based on field monitoring, interviews with activists and opinion leaders, as well as verified reports and open-source documentation.
