The United States faces a strategic challenge in balancing its relationship with both Turkey and its Kurdish allies in northeastern Syria, as tensions between the two escalate. The Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration, anchored by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), has been a vital partner in the fight against ISIS and a critical force for stability in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Turkey\u2019s ongoing threats to the Kurdish project present Washington with a difficult choice: stand by NATO-ally Turkey or support the Kurds, who have proven to be the most effective ground partners against terrorism.<\/span><\/p>\n

The balancing act<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Since the 2014 Battle of Kobani, the U.S. presence in northeastern Syria has gone beyond military support, encompassing developmental and political initiatives to foster stability. But the recent announcement that the U.S. plans to withdraw by 2026 jeopardizes this effort. Without the U.S. as a stabilizing force, both Turkey and Iran are poised to exploit the vacuum, which would directly conflict with Washington\u2019s objectives of containing Iranian influence and limiting Turkish dominance.<\/span><\/p>\n

The vacuum<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A premature U.S. exit from northeastern Syria, without providing a sustainable alternative for stability, could have disastrous consequences:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Empowering regional powers:<\/strong> A U.S. departure would open the door for Turkey and Iran to increase their footholds in Syria, further entangling the region in complex power struggles.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Destabilizing local governance:<\/strong> The collapse of the Autonomous Administration could lead to the resurgence of extremist groups and undermine efforts to build a pluralistic, inclusive system in northeastern Syria.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Eroding trust in U.S. alliances:<\/strong> Abandoning the Kurds would be viewed as a betrayal of a key ally, damaging U.S. credibility and sending a signal that American commitments are unreliable.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    A Path forward: Diplomatic leverage\u00a0<\/span>

    Washington\u2019s support for Kurdish-Turkish dialogue is not just a strategic issue but a necessity for achieving broader regional stability. SDF leaders, such as General Mazloum Abdi, have expressed a willingness to engage in unconditional dialogue with Turkey. This presents an opportunity for the U.S. to act as a mediator, ensuring the talks are fair and that Turkey does not impose unreasonable demands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    To foster successful dialogue, the U.S. should:<\/span><\/p>\n

    • Provide political support for the Kurds: Assure Turkey that the Autonomous Administration is not a threat to its national security.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Encourage economic cooperation: As demonstrated by Turkey\u2019s relationship with the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), trade and economic cooperation can build trust.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Engage regional powers: Involve actors like Russia and Iran to prevent them from obstructing agreements and to maintain Syria\u2019s territorial integrity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The U.S. as a guarantor of stability <\/span>
      \n\"\"<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      If Washington is serious about stabilizing Syria, its support for Kurdish-Turkish dialogue must be part of a larger vision for a political solution in Syria. The pluralistic and democratic model in northeastern Syria could serve as the foundation for a post-conflict Syrian political system. Convincing Turkey to accept this model as part of a broader peace solution is essential.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Alternatively, if the U.S. unconditionally backs Turkey\u2019s military operations against the Kurds, it risks destabilizing the Syrian-Turkish border and igniting further chaos that could spread throughout the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

      For Washington, the best course is a balanced approach: reinforcing its alliance with the Kurds while assuring Turkey that the northeastern Syria project does not threaten its national security. This approach will safeguard U.S. interests, prevent further conflict, and contribute to lasting stability in the Middle East.<\/span><\/p>\n

      The United States must adopt a long-term strategic vision that supports Kurdish-Turkish dialogue, ensures Kurdish rights, and demonstrates to Turkey that diplomacy, not force, is the path to secure its national interests.
